The Roti restaurant, opened just over one year now, is a big, modern, uniquely furnished establishment a couple of miles out of the city centre. It's the first time we've dined here, but it certainly won't be the last. We were very impressed with every aspect of the restaurant, (with the exception, perhaps, of the two upstairs televisions showing non-stop Hindi musical set-pieces) and will be returning in a few months to ensure the standard has remained as high. While the menu isn't as extensive as in some restaurants, the Roti offers a selection of dishes we've seen nowhere else. We started with vegetable pakora (£1.70), chicken botie (£2.50), and dahi wadi (£1.90). The pakora was excellent, large portions of potato, cauliflower and spinach in a spicy, crisp batter. The botie, chunks of grilled chicken marinated in spices, was thoroughly enjoyed. The dahi wadi, a combination of mash dall with garlic, ginger and spices and served with chick peas and yoghurt, was distinctive: a cold dish that might be an acquired taste, but which we lapped up. I had kerhaay mattar paneer as my main dish. It would have earned nine or ten had the paneer been a little tastier - though, that said, the actual curry, and the fresh peas, combined to make one of the best mattar paneers I've tasted in a long while. The keerhay chicken pasanda was excellent, spring chicken cooked with onions, tomatoes, ginger yoghurt and garnished with mango slices. The keerhay choosa provided a good portion of chicken and was beautifully spiced. The keerhay ghost, spring lamb, was also enjoyed: tender lamb in a rich, creamy sauce. We didn't have time to sample the coffee, but on the way out we bought a selection of barfi which was excellent. The Roti, on this showing, is right up there with the best in Bradford, and we recommend that our readers give it a go. |
