The Sanam came highly recommended by one of our regular readers, so we thought we'd better give it a go. It's one of those (reasonably) cheap and cheerful places that has no truck with ostentatious decoration. In fact it's a bit of a dive, with greasy carpets, formica-topped tables and wallpaper which has seen better days. But we came for the curries, not the décor.

We began with a mixture of starters: onion bhaji (£1.25), mushroom pakora (£1.40), and chicken pakora (£1.60). The onion bhajis were good: flattened cakes the width of beer mats, nicely spiced. The mushroom pakora were not as succulent as some we've sampled, but nevertheless well above average. Only the chicken pakora failed the taste test, the chicken being dry and the batter not particularly crispy.

To the main dishes: I had cauliflower, potato and peas - unlike many such dishes, the vegetables in this one were not overcooked; the cauliflower retained its texture and flavour. It was a trifle mild for my taste, but even so well above average. The spinach and potato, although liked by the rest of us who sampled it, struck MichaelH as lacking in flavour, fairly bland, expensive and not particularly filling. The dall and potato (not one the menu, but the chef will customise dishes) was on the mild side, but otherwise enjoyable. The chicken and spinach was highly rated: richly flavoured though not too spicy, with an equal measure of spinach and chicken - the best curry IanW had sampled in weeks. The chapattis were excellent, hot, light and full of flavour.

We sampled a jug of sweet lassi (£2.00) which was excellent, and finished off with surprisingly good coffee - for free, as we had to wait a while for one of the main dishes.

All in all a very pleasant dining experience. The bill came to around six pounds each - not the cheapest curry in Bradford, but the meal was well above average and we'll certainly be back at the Sanam for more.
