We last visited this restaurant well over eighteen months ago, and then we wrote: "We were disappointed with the fare on offer at the Suhana this time. In our opinion the standard has fallen substantially since our last visit, and we cannot really recommend a trip to the Suhana when there are so many other good, mid-range restaurants in the city."

The place has been completely refurbished - it's impossible to recognise the old place. Which is a bit of a shame, as the original Suhana had a low-lighted, cosy, intimate atmosphere. Now it's too bright, shiny, and lacks any atmosphere at all.

We started with onion bhaji (£1.40), cheese pakora (£2.50), and aloo pakora (£1.40). Like last time, they were very good, fresh, crisp, nicely hot and fragrantly-spiced. The better of the three were the cheese pakoras - like last time, big chunks of paneer in a 'batter with a chilli bite'

Also like last time, the starters were much better than the main courses. Having said that, my palak paneer was perfectly acceptable: spinach of excellent consistency (not at all watery, like similar dishes elsewhere) combined with generous, solid paneer. JulianF also had this dish, and gave it a nine: "Excellent. Hot, great texture, and the paneer was the best I've tasted in a year or two." The mattar paneer was also enjoyed, a substantial dish of tinned peas and solid, succulent diced paneer. The dal tarka, sadly, was described as one of the worst dishes that MichaelH had tasted in a long while. The tiny, bead-like variety of lentil (which in our humble opinion doesn't make for the best dal dish) was tasteless, greasy, and insipid. The chicken bhuna was described by IanW as, "A little disappointing. Rich and spicy, but the chicken was poor quality, consisting of small and stringy pieces." We ordered all our dishes apna-style, and they came nicely hot but not inedibly fiery.

The service, while not poor, wasn't the best: we had to wait a long time for our main dishes, and at one point considered phoning the counter for some water.

Overall, with so many good, similar-priced curry houses in the city, we can't really bring ourselves to recommend the Suhana. One for the completist only.

We last reviewed this restaurant over two years ago, and thought it high time we returned. Then we wrote: "Sadly the main courses failed to reach the high standard set by the starters. There was nothing wrong with the dishes, but nor were they anything special: another mid-range curry experience... The Suhana is well worth a visit."

Again the starters were good. The main courses, however, were way below the standard we recalled from our first visit - and we cannot bring ourselves to say that the Suhana is well worth a visit, this time.

We started with chicken pakora (£2.30), onion bhaji (£1.20), cheese pakora (£2.20), and aloo pakora (£1.40). They were very good, with perhaps the exception of the aloo dish, which like last time was a trifle undercooked. The chicken pakora boasted good chunks of high quality chicken, and the cheese pakora was of a high quality in a batter with a chilli bite, the paneer of a harder variety than the usual spongy type. The onion bhaji was excellent: they were of the ball variety, but thoroughly cooked through, crisp and tasty. Recommended.

Would that we could say the same for the main courses...

I had a paneer badshahi - way overpriced at £5.70. The paneer was fine, but in a cheese dish the sauce and accompanying vegetables need to be of sufficient spiciness to offset the blandness of the paneer. This wasn't the case with this dish. The sauce was bland to the point of tastelessness. The two other vegetable dishes, the dopiaza and the dansak, were very poor: although the menu claimed that the vegetable dishes contained fresh veg, they didn't. They were a combination of tinned and frozen vegetables in a non-existent sauce, (despite the menu's claim that the dopiaza was cooked in a 'thick spicy sauce') and pretty bland to boot. The chicken dishes scored better: the chicken tikka moglai as described as: "rich but unsophisticated, but the quality of the chicken could have been better: it was stringy, and the sauce too coloured." The pathia was far from 'sour and hot' as promised in the menu, but overly sweet and hot. The quality of the chicken was poor, though the portion was good; overall, it was enjoyed.

We finished off with some pretty appalling coffee.

We were disappointed with the fare on offer at the Suhana this time. In our opinion the standard has fallen substantially since our last visit, and we cannot really recommend a trip to the Suhana when there are so many other good, mid-range restaurants in the city.

Just another standard curry house from the outside - with a garish yellow-lighted front panel - inside, the Suhana is cosy, discreetly-lighted and atmospheric. It has the ambience of a high-priced restaurant, with the advantage of serving curries at the cheaper end of the scale.

We've rarely come across such a wide variety of starters, and we were impressed by the quality of the dishes. They were little short of exceptional. We ordered cheese pakora (£1.95), Cholle bhatura (a chick pea curry) (£1.95), aloo pakora (£1.25), mushroom bhaji (£1.75), onion bhaji (£1.00) and mixed meat kebab (£2.10). The cheese pakora were a delight - slabs of succulent bona fide paneer in crisp, spiced batter. The mushroom bhaji was excellent too, the mushrooms plump and tasty and the batter nicely flavoured. The mixed kebab (shami, sheesh and chicken tikka) were well-spiced and rich without being overwhelming. The onion bhaji and the chhole bhatura were enjoyed. Only the aloo pakora failed to satisfy, the potatoes being a little undercooked.

Sadly the main courses failed to reach the high standard set by the starters. There was nothing wrong with the dishes, but nor were they anything special: another mid-range curry experience. I had dall tarka - a good portion for the price - with very good chapattis. I enjoyed the dish, but it wasn't the finest dall I've tasted recently. I dipped into and enjoyed the potato and chick pea masala, and I found the dall and mushroom madras nicely fiery (though Jack found it too hot!). The vegetable biryani was huge, and good value for money. The sauce of the chicken bhuna was tasty but a little thin, while the chicken itself tasted as if it had been boiled rather than roasted or fried.

The Suhana is well worth a visit. The atmosphere and service are well above average, and the starters are the best we've sampled in the fifteen restaurants we've reviewed so far.
