The Alhambra II is no more, and there will be few tears shed by the members of the Bradford Curry Guide. It was the worst restaurant we've visited in the city, and won't be missed. In its place - open just five days when we dined there - is the Café Zaika. It's been redecorated and re-furnished, and the style is modern without being trendy. The staff is young, efficient and friendly. We were hopeful of a dining experience that might contrast favourably with the last time we visited these premises... And our hopes were fulfilled. We started with onion bhaji (£1.45), aloo pakora (£1.50), chicken pakora (£2.50) and mushroom pakora (£1.50). They were all of a high quality: hot and fresh, the batter crisp and highly spiced: the mushroom pakora was exceptional, a generous helping of big, whole, succulent mushrooms. And, delighted to report, the main courses continued the trend. My aloo gobi was distinctively flavoured - no mild Anglicised curry this, but a slow-burner. The potatoes might have been tinned, but they'd absorbed sufficient of the spices for that not to matter. All in all, a very near excellent dish. The chicken dhansak was described as, "Exceptional quality chicken in a rich, well-textured, sweet sauce with a nice after-taste. Good quantity of chicken. The garlic naan was a bit bland, but I won't complain." The shahi meat korma was a mild creamy dish. The sauce was of a rich, thick consistency, and contained plenty of meat, which in places was slightly tough, though this didn't much affect the quality of the dish. The chana aloo side dish: potatoes and chick peas are a great combination, and this curry was excellent. It was dry, yet moist, and the spices, chillies, and hint of lemon juice, brought out the different tastes and textures very well. The chicken rogan josh was described as, "Rich, with large chunks of seasoned chicken. Perhaps a little too much ghee. Quite spicy." We finished with some uninspiring coffee at 80p a cup. We were impressed by the overall standard of the fare on offer at the
Café Zaika, and we hope that the same can be said when we visit
the restaurant again in a few months. |
