A survivor of Pearl Harbor that won the esteemed Navy Cross during World War II, Robards first rose to fame in the New York stage production 'The Iceman Cometh'. His love for the theatre never diminished and he would continue to work in this field throughout his career.
He played Doc Holliday in John Sturges' 'Hour of the Gun'.
He appeared in only one Spaghetti Western, Leone's 'Once Upon A Time in the West', playing the lovable rouge Cheyenne.
He went on to work with Sam Peckinpah on 'Ballad of Cable Hogue' and 'Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid'.
