Woody Strode

Born: 28 July 1914, Los Angeles, California, USA
Died: 31 December 1994, Glendora, California, USA

Strode was an athlete and professional American-football player before turning actor.

A close friend of John Ford, he became a regular in his westerns, and played the title role in 'Sergeant Rutledge'. Another memorable performance was as a gladiator in 'Spartacus', battling with Kirk Douglas to the death.

Although he appeared in several Spaghetti Westerns, it is as one of the three gunmen waiting at Cattle Corner during the opening scene of 'Once Upon a Time in the West' that his striking presence is used most effectively.
