Branch Aims and Principles

Aims

To provide emotional and social support.
To give information and advice.
To raise awareness of the need for services.

Principles
Through the branch, volunteers will work together at all levels,
to further the work of the Alzheimer's Society in the local area
and to improve the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers.

In partnership with other local and national organisations,
the branch will share information and provide a listening ear
regarding the needs of all people with dementia, carers,
families and associated professionals.

Branch campaigning, support and advice will be based
around a person centred approach to dementia care.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for several syndromes related to a decline in thinking skills. Common symptoms include a gradual loss of memory,  problems with reasoning or judgement, disorientation, difficulty in learning, loss of language skills and decline in the ability to perform routine tasks

Alzheimer's disease is one of several disorders that cause the gradual loss of brain cells. First described by Dr Alois Alzheimer in 1906, the disease was considered rare, although research has shown it is the leading cause of dementia.

Alzheimer Café

The Alzheimer Cafe is a place where carers and people with dementia can go together, primarily as a social outing, but also to find out about local support and services. Transport can be arranged.

Alzheimer’s Cafes are currently held at:

Chesterfield, Clay Cross, Dronfield, Bolsover, Bolsover travelling lunch club, Clowne, South Normanton & Staveley
