FAIRTRADE MEETINGS

APR 2008 TBA
Town Hall, Chesterfield

Anyone interested in Fairtrade is very welcome to join the group, either as individuals or representing other local groups or organisations.

Fairtrade - what's it about?

The Fairtrade mark on a product means that it is independently certified to internationally agreed Fairtrade standards.

It means producer organisations have received a fair and stable price and a social premium that they can invest for the future.

Fairtrade brings about tangible change for communities struggling against poverty and unfair trade and already contributes to improving the lives of around 5 million people across the globe. But much more can still be done...

C
hesterfield Fair Trade Group

Chesterfield Fairtrade Group was set up in 2006 to promote "Fairtrade" in shops, cafes, workplaces, anywhere that people meet together across the Borough of Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

One of our main aims for 2007 is to achieve Fairtrade Borough Status for Chesterfield.

We are in the process of undertaking an audit of which businesses and workplaces in Chesterfield Borough are currently promoting, using or selling Fairtrade products such as tea, coffee, sugar, juice, snacks, chocolate, fruit etc. We plan to launch a Fairtrade directory for Chesterfield in time for Fairtrade Fortnight.

Chesterfield Fairtrade Group meets monthly to plan events and activities that promote Fairtrade.

A meeting of Chesterfield Fairtrade Group took place on Tues 17th April 2007.

Copies of the Chesterfield Fairtrade Directory are now available from Chesterfield Libraries, Tourist Information Centre, Oxfam shop, Organic Heaven shop or can be obtained on request from the Council’s Sustainability Unit (Tel 345765).

A Fairtrade stall with sales of products and information will be in New Square at the Chesterfield May Day Gala on Monday 7th May.

The group discussed progress towards achieving Fairtrade status for Chesterfield. A few more Fairtrade sales outlets and a flagship local employer who actively demonstrates a commitment to Fairtrade with its staff are still required.

A draft constitution for the group was discussed in some detail and will be finalised and adopted at the Annual Meeting.

The Annual Meeting will be held on Monday 4th June at 7pm at the Town Hall. All existing members and anyone interested in supporting and promoting Fairtrade in Chesterfield are invited to attend. For information, call Jenie Lismore on 07968 382545 or jenielismore@googlemail.com
