BIRD SIGHTINGS IN
POOLSBROOK COUNTRY PARK DURING JANUARY 2008
The weather during January was very wet and windy during the middle of
the month there were severe gales which caused structural damage in the
area, the wet weather caused lots of flooding in the area especially at
the bottom of Tom Lane, behind Poolsbrook Carr and along Erin Road.
Birds recorded during the first week of the month included 2 Cormorant
on the 6th, a male Goosander on the 1st, a Merlin which flew over Erin
Road on the 6th and a Peregrine which flushed the Gull at Markham on the
5th.
There were huge numbers of Gulls in the area this week these included a
Medit Gull on the 3rd, Iceland Gulls on the 4th, 5th and the 6th and
Glaucous Gulls on the 2nd, 5th and 6th,Yellow Legged Gulls were also
seen along with a possible Kumlein’s Gull.
Other birds included Great Crested Grebes, Canada Geese, Siskin,
Redpoll, Tufted Duck and Grey Heron.
Week two produced 4 Gadwall on Poolsbrook Marsh on the 13th and 2
Whooper Swans on the 10th also on the marsh, Gulls included a Medit Gull
on the 3rd, Iceland Gulls on the 8th and the 9th and Glaucous Gulls on
the 10th, a Yellow Legged Gull was seen on the 11th along with a few
Great Black-Backed Gulls.
Other birds seen this week included Bullfinch, Redpoll and a variety of
Tits and Finches; there was a small flock of winter thrushes roaming the
area to.
The 3rd week produced 2 Gadwall on Poolsbrook Marsh on the 20th, 2
Female Goosander on the main lake on the 19th and a Green Sandpiper also
on the main lake on the 19th, again there were huge numbers of Gulls
around the area these included Iceland Gulls on the 17th, 18th and the
19th and a Glaucous Gull on the 17th.
Other birds recorded included over 50 Golden Plover near Markham on the
20th, a Treecreeper and a Great Spotted Woodpecker in the Graveyard on
the 20th.
The final week of the month produced birds such has 2 Cormorants on the
26th, a couple of Gadwall on Poolsbrook Marsh all week, 4 Goosander on
the main lake on the 22nd and a Grey Wagtail near the main lake on the
27th.
Gulls included Iceland Gulls on the 23rd, 24th and the 29th and 4
Glaucous Gulls on the 24th, a single Snipe was seen in the field with
the Cattle on the 26th and the 29th and four Tree Sparrow flew over the
park on the 29th.
Other birds seen during January included Pochard, Little Grebe, large
numbers of Crows and Jackdaws, Mute Swan, Moorhen and Coot, a Green
Woodpecker and a few Lapwings.
Other Wildlife seen during January includes a couple of Water Rail along
the brook, a Fox, a Stoat and a possible Weasel near the Café.
BIRD SIGHTINGS IN POOLSBROOK COUNTRY PARK DURING FEBRUARY 2008
The weather during February was very mixed it was wet and windy but mild
during the first half of the month but it became cold, sunny and frosty
by the end of the month at this time the ponds had a covering of ice.
February was another good month for Gulls there were huge flocks on the
main lake, on the Landfill Site and also on the mud in Markham Pit Yard,
these large numbers contained several juvenile Glaucous Gulls, a couple
of 1st winter Glaucous Gulls, a couple of 1st winter and adult winter
Iceland Gulls and 2 1st winter and 2 2nd winter Caspian Gulls.
There was also Possible sightings of a THAYERS GULL and a KUMLEIN’S GULL
in the area but both these birds a still under positive identification.
There were up to 100 Canada Geese around the park this month along with
2 male Goosander on the 1st and 4 Goosander on the 16th, there were just
a few Pochard and Tufted Duck but there were a few Gadwall and Teal on
Poolsbrook Marsh.
A single Cormorant flew around the main lake on the 1st and there were
the usual Mute Swans and Great Crested Grebes, by the end of the month a
pair of Coot had begun nest building and a pair of Grebes were
displaying.
Waders seen this month included a small flock of Lapwing around the
Landfill Site, a single Snipe near the main lake on the 1st; a Redshank
on the 26th while two Curlew flew over on the 24th.
There were several sightings of a Common Buzzard in the area and there
were regular sightings of both Sparrowhawk and Kestrel, a Peregrine
flushed the Gulls from Markham on the 3rd.
Other birds seen during February included a small flock of Tree Sparrows
on the 2nd and the 23rd, a Water Rail on the mud along the river Doe
Lea, a Great Spotted Woodpeckers which were heard in the Trees behind
Poolsbrook Marsh, a Grey Wagtail which was seen along the brook, a
Goldcrest on Plantation 1 on the 18th, several Male Bullfinch, several
Grey Heron and huge numbers of Corvids.
By the end of the month a pair of Great Crested Grebes had began to
build a nest in the area and Blue Tits were nest building in one of the
boxes, a Mistle Thrush was already probably sat on eggs in the area.
With the money raised from the sale of Duck Food a nest box containing a
Camera has been placed somewhere in the park, live pictures will be
transmitted into the café during the weekends.
Other Wildlife seen this month included Water Vole, Rabbit, Hare and
Fox.
