There is a legend that
tells of a very powerful magician who persuaded a blacksmith from
Bolsover to shoe the Devil. But the blacksmith drove a nail into the
Devil's foot. In a violent rage the Devil flew towards Chesterfield. Flying over the Church lashing out in agony he caught the spire and twisted it out of shape. |

Charles Cavendish had a country house built on the site of a Norman
castle, and he wanted the house to look like a castle. The house was
occupied during the Civil War in 1645 by the Parliamentary army who
wanted to demolish the whole building and did much damage. After the WW2
the site was handed over to the Ministry of Works, and heavy engineering
works were started to save the house, which was extensively restored by
the 1990s. More Information ... |

On the site of an
older manor house. Sir Peter Frecheville built
Staveley Hall in its present form in 1604. Six large windows on the
west front are in early renaissance style. In 1847 one was altered
to provide a bay, the north end bay window is original. In 1752 the
east front was restored and above the door is the Frecheville Coat
of Arms. Fine Jacobean oak panelling and original fireplaces are located
in the rooms of the hall. More Information... |

The old well-known rhyme - 'Hardwick Hall - more glass than wall'. This is the first impression that the visitor will get when visiting the magnificent Elizabethan house. It sits on the same westward facing slope as the nearby Bolsover Castle and is one of the finest examples of Elizabethan architecture in the country.
