Using a 'GOTO' Telescope - Personal Experiences
by David Pugh

At the February 2nd meeting of CDAA our secretary David Pugh gave a talk on his personal experiences of using his large GOTO Telescope. Some fifteen or so years ago without access to a permanent observatory and a wish to take photographs of deep sky objects, David bought a Meade LX200 10” Schmidt-Cassegrain telescope. This is powerful, compact and considered ‘portable’ but he went on to explain his difficulties experienced with setting it up. Members were advised to consider smaller, less ambitious telescopes for first time personal use. However, he was able to show the impressive results that could be obtained with such equipment. Over the years he had added many useful accessories and described his hard learnt techniques for getting the best out of them. It gave the audience a new appreciation of the extremely high quality images obtained by enthusiastic amateurs.
