Discovering Supernovae: Methods, Motivation and Rewards by Tom Boles

At the well attended monthly meeting of the CDAA held on 5th February, we had a special guest speaker - Tom Boles. He is a world renowned Supernovae discoverer. In the talk entitled 'Discovering Supernovae: Methods, Motivation and Rewards' he began by describing the physical processes that lead to the two main types of Supernovae and then went on to outline the equipment, software and methods he uses to find them in other galaxies. The robotic system using three separate telescopes generates around 145 images per hour. It is the analysis of these images and the checks before confirmation that take time and effort. The many questions and comments by the audience were an indication of how well this informative and interesting talk was received.

The Next Meeting

At our next meeting to be held on 5th March, we have our previous chairman Peter Carlo giving a presentation on the latest progress regarding NASA's 'Orion' program. This being the Manned Return to the Moon. It will be held as usual at the 'Friends Meeting House' in Granville Road, Clacton. Please note that new members and visitors are always welcome at these meetings. Visitors are very welcome but are charged a fee of £2.00".
