Stellar Classification Part I - 'Just Points of Light' by Bob Leon

On the 3rd January 2008 our long time member and Publicity Officer, Bob Leon gave the first of a two part presentation on Stellar Classification.. He described the detailed physics used by astronomers to distinguish between the stars in the night sky. By looking at the properties of stars, he outlined the links between photospheric temperature, black body radiation, luminosity and spectra. This led to the placing of star types onto the well-known (to astronomers) H-R diagram. The second and final part of this presentation to be given in February, will detail the classification schemes that have been developed to label the stars.

The Next Meeting

The next monthly meeting to be held on the 7th February will have Bob Leon completing his two part presentation on Stellar Classification entitled 'Letters and Numbers'. The meeting will be held as usual at the 'Friends Meeting House' in Granville Road, Clacton . Please note that new members and visitors are always welcome at these meetings. First time visitors may attend for free but subsequent visits are charged a fee of £1.50.
