At the 2nd March meeting David Pugh gave the second part of his 'Galaxies' presentation. The first entitled 'The Milkyway and Other Galaxies' was given on 7th April 2005. This had as its main theme our own galaxy in detail. In this new presentation, the emphasis was placed upon the other galaxies in our Local Group. Via a series of excellent images taken by the Hubble Space Telescope and ground based telescopes from around the world, he revealed how insignificant our galactic home in the Universe really is. Examples of many of the different types of galaxies were represented togerther with puzzling vast conglomerations of stars where, back in the mists of time, galaxies has collided and passed through one another. Whilst gathering material for these presentations which were originally intended as a self contained set of two, David had realised that a third (and final?) part would be necessary to complete the series. This will look 'Beyond the Local Group' and be presented at a later date.
The next meeting to be held as usual at the 'Friends Meeting House' in Granville Road, Clacton on April 6th will have our treasurer, Brian Cottis, giving a presentation entitled 'Binocular Moon'. Please note that new members and visitors are always welcome at these meetings. There is a visitors fee of £1.50.
