The Milky Way and Other Galaxies Part 3 by David Pugh
The first meeting of the New Year was held on January 4th. David Pugh gave the third and final presentation of his 'Galaxies' series. He began with an overview of material covered in his first two talks. The first had included a modern definition of what a galaxy is and then gave the differing types and their classification with examples. The second went on to describe how galaxies gather together into distinct gravitationally bound groups and the group to which our own galaxy belongs - the 'local group'. This final, part three was entitled 'Beyond the Local Group' and described the large scale structure of our Universe, with groups gathered into 'Clusters', 'SuperClusters', 'Filaments' and 'Walls'.
