General Information

These reports appear in the Friday (before our monthly meeting held on the first Thursday of the month) editions of the 'Clacton Gazzette' and 'Essex Evening Standard' in their 'Neighbourhood News' sections

Question Time

At a few monthly meetings prior to this on April 3rd, members were asked to submit some basic astronomy questions, write them down and place them in a box. Four of our more experienced members then gave detailed answers as presentations. David Pugh covered the concept of the 'parsec' and why they are chosen as the preferred measure of distance by astronomers. Brian Cottis chose to explain differences between 'apparent' and 'absolute' magnitude when talking about the brightness of stars. Peter Carlo dealt with rockets and other propulsion systems and Bob Leon tried to explain 'Dark Matter'.

The Next Meeting

At the next monthly meeting to be held on the 1st May, we have a special guest speaker Jerry Workman. His presentation will cover the 'Cassini Mission'. The meeting will be held as usual at the 'Friends Meeting House' in Granville Road, Clacton. Please note that new members and visitors are always welcome at these meetings. Visitors are very welcome but are charged a fee of £1.50.
