8 Plus Eight. |
An integrated switch
sequencer, allowing the user to operate a powered chair and eight other
devices with a single switch.
|
This computer controlled integrated sequencer is operated by a simple switch arrangement. Such an arrangement can be merely one switch, or it can be up to three should the user have a better level of switch control.
The eight LEDs on the face indicate compass point directions of travel plus an additional LED in the bottom left-hand corner that is labelled MODE. The eight direction LEDs each have a secondary use, as marked on the casing, which comes into play when the mode LED is illuminated.
|
 |
The secondary functions include four infra-red channels to operate devices by remote control, three switched channels to control devices plugged directly into the 8 plus eight's 3.5mm jack sockets and an attention caller buzzer.
Operation is very straight forward. The LED's scan in a clockwise direction until the user presses the switch as the LED reaches the compass point direction in which they wish to travel. The scanning stops and the chair moves in the direction then shown by that LED. The chair will continue in that direction for as long as the user keeps the switch depressed or the time-out safety feature automatically stops the chair.
If scanning is stopped on the MODE light, chair motion is automatically inhibited and scanning restarts but this time it is indicating the secondary function of each LED position. As with drive mode the scanning continues until the user presses the switch as the scan reaches the function they wish to perform. If this is, say, the BUZZ function pressing the switch will activate the attention caller buzzer. Similarly, selection of 1R1 will activate the equipment targeted by that particular infra-red transmitter, which is usually used with a Possum environmental control system.
The 8 plus eight can be easily configured to suit the number of user switches and customise the particular needs of the user. For instance, in a three switch arrangement one may wish to convert the automatic scanning to manual scanning and use two switches to scan clockwise or anticlockwise and so speed up selection of wheelchair direction or mode function. It is also possible, with a three switch configuration, to steer the chair left or right whilst travelling forward and so achieve almost joystick accuracy. These changes can be carried out on the spot and therefore changing circumstances and user abilities can be easily addressed. This also means that the device can be readily reconfigured to suit a new user.
