My life began in Blackpool, moved to Kent, settled in Aldermaston and matured in Wales.

Following graduation in Applied Physics from the University of Wales (Cardiff) I embarked on a joint PhD project between the University and Velindre Hospital (Cardiff) to investigate the use of Thermally Stimulated Current Dosemeters using high resistivity polymers. After successful completion of this degree I was employed as a Basic Grade Medical Physicist (as it was then known before A and B grades) in radiotherapy at the same hospital.
|
After 4 years of doing manual treatment planning and general dosimetry I moved to Sheffield (WPH) into a senior physicist post. 21 years later, as Head of Radiotherapy Physics, I can look back at the changes to the physics service that have been required to keep pace with the increasing amount of work and reorganisation.
|
My research interests continued in 1982 with grants in Microwave Hyperthermia and Thermal Imaging, and have progressed to today's list that includes; CT Virtual Simulation, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, Synthetic Diamond Detectors and Image Registration.

The future at WPH looks challenging with the expansion of the accelerator facility and new IT technology. What does the radiotherapy crystal ball foretell? See ‘OUR WORK’ and 'WHATS NEW'
