The Cyclists Touring Club is in the forefront of campaigning for cycling nationally.
Locally in the Leeds area the lead organisation for cycling rights work is the
Leeds Cycling Action Group.
Their
website also contains a lot of information about cycling in the Leeds area, with
useful links. Also a source of useful links about cycling groups is the
West Yorkshire Cycling
and Public Transport website.
We (Leeds CTC) are a section within the West Yorkshire District Association of the
Club. WYDA also run a series of rather more competitive rides during the summer
months, with medals and things to earn. Details of those events, plus contact details
for the DA officers, can be found on the
WYDA website.
Among the other West Yorkshire DA Sections are
Huddersfield
,Halifax
and
Pontefract
, who like ourselves
organise regular cycle rides, as well as other events.
A number of us from time to time ride the events organised by
Audax UK. These rides are a challenge to complete a ride of a specified length within a range of time. They are non-competitive, and range in distance from 50km up to 1400km. Several now appear on our own programme and that if the West Yorkshire DA.
Supported by all the Yorkshire DA's, though run under the auspices of the Yorkshire Cycling Federation,
are the annual
GHS Memorial Rides. These are in memory of George Herbert Stancer, a Yorkshireman
who played
a leading part in the earlier days of the CTC as Secretary and President.
Don't forget the York Cycle Show in June each year (also
popularly known as 'York Rally'). The biggest show there is, and certainly the best! See you there.
On weekends away, we normally use accommodation provided by YHA (formerly called the Youth Hostels Association), which is ideal for cyclists. You can find more detail on the
YHA Website. There is also a
YHA Walking Group in Leeds, which also organises some cycling activities as well as walks and social events.
