Stay Safe

There are an enormous number of interactive message boards and chat rooms on the internet. Many offer support and advice for the recently and long-term bereaved.

A large number of people receive comfort, solace and friendship though these groups. Recent news stories and press reports have, however, highlighted the potential dangers associated with them.

Here are some general guidelines about how to maintain your safety when using message boards and chat rooms.

Please think carefully before agreeing to meet anyone contacted via the Internet. Should you decide to meet, please remember the following SAFETY GUIDELINES:

• Inform friends or family where you are going
• Meet in a public place
• Do not accept a lift
• Do not give out your name and address until you are ready and are sure you want to do so (either via a message board, e-mail or in person)
• Follow your instincts and only arrange a further meeting if you have no doubts
• Stay in control at all times
