DBZ is not for
girls-if you believe this...GET OFF MY SITE!!
WTF, I know, but
it's something I'm sick to death of hearing from boys!!
How many times have you heard or even said this or
something like it. My brother's friends (as well as some of my
own), are usually a bit surprised by my 'obsession' with DBZ. Some
of my friends don't seem that shocked because of my great interest in
other cartoons such as 'The Simpsons', or my love of every thing WWF, as
well as a slight interest in other anime series' such as 'Tenchi' and a
PAST interest in 'Pokemon' (this went down hill after becoming known
around school as Sarah Pokemon!!)
We all know that DBZ was probably originally
aimed at boys, but it's pretty clear now that it can be very appealing
to both sexes. We can usually (in my opinion), see that it was
aimed at boys rather than girls before it took off because, (again, this
is my observation), most if not all of the fighting characters are male,
Goku, Gohan, Krillen, Yamcha, Vegeta etc. The female characters
have important roles in the series, but they seem to pale in comparison
to the roles of the boys, especially during battles and fights. We
know that the girls can kick some serious butt as well, we are
occasionally reminded, although the reasons for demonstrating
their strength is usually either as a reminder of their power, or as a
humorous alternative to the male fighting. A good example of this
off the top of my head is early on in the Garlic jr saga, when Marron
(Krillen's girlfriend), called Chi Chi Gohan's 'grand mother' and an
'old lady'. Chi Chi explodes with anger and uses what looks to me
to be the Kio Ken attack (Kami knows how or where the Hfil she learned
this, Goku hadn't long been taught it by King Kai!). Anyway, Chi
Chi explodes and attempts to attack Marron, but is held back by Master
Roshi, Bulma and Yamcha. She shows that she can be in creditably
powerful, but does not get to fight and show what she can do (which is a
shame because I really hate Marron!). Apart from later characters
such as Pan Videl and Android #18, (who we don't see for a long time
into the series anyway) we don't see many girls fighting (and we don't
see Chi Chi fight at all after the end of Dragonball).
But liking things such as Dragonball and
Wrestling doesn't make me a tom boy, nor does it anyone else. In
fact, I am as probably as far from being a tom boy as you can get
(without turning into a little miss goodie two shoes! I think I'm more
on the wrong edge of weird). But that's just me. Dragonball
has something to suit-well-most people at least. Slinky anime
girls for the boys, and hunky, strong, muscular, butt kicking guys for
us girls-oh yeah, and the martial arts scenes are cool who ever you are.
One final note on this topic, if I hear ANYONE
saying "girls don't watch DBZ, they don't like all the icky
blood", I am personally going to go Oozaru on their asses!
Ok?
