Piccolo
was originally from the planet Namek, well actually, the first Piccolo
was from Namek. Ok, bear with me for a minute. The first
Piccolo, Piccolo Daimao the "demon king"), wad killed in a
fight with Goku. Before he died he, shall we say, spit out an
egg. When that egg hatched, the Namek split into two Nameks (I'm a
little fuzzy on the details because I haven't seen any of The first
series Dragonball which was when all this happened). The two
Nameks were Piccolo and Kami, one was good, and one was evil-ya know,
Kami-good, Piccolo-bad. Kami became the Guardian of the earth and
Piccolo tried to take over the earth which was how he came to know and
be enemies with Goku and co. Phew, Goku and Piccolo later had to
team up to fight Raditz and save Gohan. When Goku was killed, he
took Gohan to train him. He is very tough on Gohan because he
realizes that Gohan has a great power inside of him. He calls
Gohan pathetic and week, while at the same time muttering under his
breath, 'that boy's gonna be the strongest of us all'.
Gradually, he came to love and care for Gohan, it was these feelings
which put him on the path to becoming good. He died during the
battle with the Saiyans, shielding Gohan from Nappa. He becomes
one of the strongest Z fighters, later he becomes good and fuses back
with Kami to become the Guardian of the earth. He is a very
serious character, but does become more relaxed and actually
LAUGHS!! He is also very solitary and when he is not fighting or
with the Z team, he lives alone in the wilderness, guarding the earth
from enemies and invasion.
Piccolo
tends to be very serious, which makes it ever more funny when he makes a
joke (very rare) or when he gets embarrassed (also very rare, but it
does happen, remember when Krillen said Piccolo was going to Take Gohan
away and eat him?! Or the time when Chi Chi made him and Goku get
drivers licenses?!!, even when on Kaio's planet he called Kaio
"mom")
Making
the change from evil trying to kill Goku and take over the world demon
king to unofficial guardian of the earth is a pretty big change, but it
is an interesting one to watch, especially during the Saiya-jin and the
Cel sagas. Piccolo and Gohan become very close during the entire
series, and Piccolo and Goku become quite good friends and a pretty good
team to (even though some of the other characters are scared spineless
of him-Bulma for example, a VERY good example!)
Kami:
Another
Namekian, Kami is Piccolo's 'other half' He shares his mind with
piccolo (see Piccolo profile). He is the Guardian of the earth,
(God). He later (in the android saga) fuses back with Piccolo to
make Piccolo stronger to defeat the androids and Cel. He creates
the Dragonballs on earth. The symbol on the front of his clothing
means 'God'. He came to earth when he was a child and didn't
know of Namek until Vegeta told the Z team of it. He and Piccolo
don't usually get on to well...its pretty funny to watch!
Nail:
Nail
was Nameks greatest warrior, and the guardian and protector of Guru, the
Namekian Elder. He was almost killed in a battle with Frieza on
Namek. When Piccolo was wished back to life, he came across Nail
who (half dead) told him of a Technique which would enable them to
fuse, saving Nail's life and making Piccolo stronger.
