Introduction

Welcome to Cockington Church. It is dedicated to Our Lord's Blessed Mother and to St George, the Patron Saint of England - this title probably being added at the time of the Crusades or at the Reformation.

A Brief History of the Church

The Church was built in the eleventh century, probably a part standing as early as 1069, and by 1250 the vast majority of the building, including the tower, was completed.

It was the Chapel for the house and the village (most of the village being in service to the house). Services were taken by the Premonstre Canons of Torre Abbey who would come accross from the Abbey and take up residence for a period of time - living in the church. (There are rooms in the Tower, above the Vestry and there one beside beside the Altar).

The pulpit is believed to have come from a Spanish Galleon

The Church has seen many important events.
