The Loss of the Frigate 'Hynde'
in St Aubyn's Bay, Jersey
on the 7th December 1721

On Thursday, 7th December 1721, H.M. Frigate 'Hynde' was entering the roads off St Helier, captained by John Furzer, Esq. and amongst its passengers was Monsieur James Corbet.

Two miles out to sea, in St Aubin's Bay, it struck the Hinguette rock and sank within five minutes. Sixty-eight people were rescued, but the Captain, his brother and son, a Madam Payn and James Corbet were drowned.

James's body was found at Noirmont, to the west of the Island, and buried at St Brelade on 9th January 1721/2. The Captain was recovered on 26th January and buried in St Helier's Churchyard the same evening.
James Corbet was the son of Jurat (Judge of the Royal Court) James Corbet and Anne de Carteret, Dame de Rozel. He was baptised at St Helier's Parish Church on 4th August 1695 and married Elizabeth Bandinel on 17th May 1719 at St Saviour's Church.

Their daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1720, became Dame de Rozel and married Charles Lempriere in 1733 at the age of thirteen. The manor of Rozel thus returned to the Lempriere family who continue as seigneurs to the present day.
