Pelham fought in the Civil War and was captured at
Shrewsbury.
Stephen Pickstock (a member of the Sealed Knot Society and involved with
Sir Vincent Corbet's Dragoons) - see bottom of page for a connection to
further details about the Dragoons) writes:
What is important about this is not the fact that it is not contemporary with the civil war but that Pelham Corbett had military service and military service at a time not so far from the civil war - ie he would have been 41 in 1644 and he would have been useful to the Royalist high Command in Shrewsbury - hence his capture at Shrewsbury.
By the way after Shrewsbury he was probably released on parole as he does not - if I remember correctly - appear on the list of prisoners at High House in Staffordshire (a parlimentarian pow camp) - if he did give his parole he may have carried on fighting - but I don't think so because he tends not to appear with others at the end of the war, and he probably settled down with the heavy foot of the parliamentarian oppressors on his neck - do you think I am letting my bias creep into this?
Of course the other big thing about Pelham was that when they put troops into Albright Hussey - which is apparently a restaurant now - the soldier commanding them was the famous William Preece of Miyddle and when the parly troops appeared he had ten men , but he shouted things like - you five to the dairy and you eight go to the back rooms. Then when he recognised one of the men in the yard below - a man called Bunny - he shouted "have at you Bunny!" grabbed a gun and shot him. The bullet passed through his leg and into the horse beneath him and killed the horse stone dead.
At this point parliament beat a hasty retreat.Pelham thought about what had happened and about his house and they withdrew troops from the house so that it would not be involved in any more fighting.
