The Super Furry Animals formed in '95 and originally started life as a techno band. They signed to Anskt records and under this label released two singles. The all Welsh 'Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychyndrobwllantysiliogogogochynygofod' or 'In Space EP' and the 'Moog Droog EP'. The later release including an early version of 'God! Show Me Magic'.
At the beginnning of '96 the Furries sign to Creation records and it from this stage that they catapulted themselves onto the now florishing 'Britpop' scene.
The single Hometown Unicorn is released. It just misses out on hitting the fabled UK top 40, peaking at number 47 of the single charts.
The single God! Show Me Magic is released. This time round they clear the magic number and chart in at number 33.
The 12 track Album 'Fuzzy Logic' is released.
The single Something For the Weekend is released. This song climbs even higher into the charts and peaks at number 18.
The single If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You is released, also reaching position 18 in the UK charts.
The limited edition The Man Don't Give a Fuck single is released. This song has become something of an anthem among fans, and as far as I know has been played at every SFA gig since. Despite the obvious radio ban it received the song managed to reach position 22 in the UK single charts.
The single Hermann Loves Pauline, one of my favourite tracks is released. A great song with a cool video it peaks at number 26 in the charts. This song showed a new direction for them with a more syth sound to the music.
The single The International Language of Screaming is released. It peaks in the charts at number 26.
The 14 track album Radiator is released. It confirms the new musical direction incorporated the traditional guitar band and the modern electronic sound.
The single Play It Cool is released. It is a different version than the one included on the album. It peaks at number 27 in the charts.
The single Demons is released. It also reaches number 27 in the charts.
The superb Ice Hockey Hair EP kicks off the years offerings and climbs to their then highest ever chart position, reaching number 12 in the charts.
The 13 track (14 with the hidden track!) album Out Spaced is released. A collection of B-Sides, (If you can call them that as they make a fantastic album) it proved that unlike many artists SFA recorded a complete collection of songs with each release and not just a title tracks and some hastely added single fillers. With the perfection of 'Ice Hockey Hair' it was time to play the waiting game as the Furries recorded their next album.
The single Northern Lites is released and it soared straight into the UK top 10, the highest chart position for an SFA single.
The 14 track (15 with the hidden track!) Album Guerrilla is released.
The hauntingly beautiful single Fire In My Heart is released and slams into the UK top 20 the following week.
The Super Furry Animals anounce their sponsoring of Cardiff Football Club amid much valued media interest. As a result the teams shirts bared the SFA logo in all its glory! (Mind you...It did'nt really inspire the team much!)
Alan McGee annouces the end of the Creation Label and his desire to move into the internet music market. It is this label that SFA are signed to in the UK. The single Do or Die is released and enters the UK top 40 at number 20. It is the last SFA release on Creation.
Super Furry Animals win the award for Best Live Act at the NME Brat Awards on the 1st of February. Gruff Rhys was there to recieve the award. When asked how it felt for the band to be voted Best Live Act he responded with "Is it still day? It's very good. This afternoon drinking...it goes straight to your head." Other results for the Furries at the awards were 3rd place for the Best LP award, 2nd for Best Band and 2nd for Best Single.
SFA play their first gig of 2000 and treat the crowd to songs from their then still to be released 'Mwng' album. The gig took place at the Colchester Arts Centre and as this was the first time they had played the new Welsh only songs Gruff told the crowd: "You are all being used as guinea pigs. We have never played these songs live before. We hope you like them, even if you don’t understand anything we are singing." (Very true coz I don't have a clue myself!...Ed)
