Buying the cage
When buying a cage for your bird, get the biggest one you can, as the more space the happier the bird will be. Get a cage which is meant for the bird, as if the bars are too spaced out smaller birds can get stuck and hurt. Try to get a cage which has vertical and horizotal bars as it is easy to attached food and water bowls. Having a removable bottom or a pull-out bottom on the cage is handy when it comes to cleaning out your bird, and more than one door is best too.
What does my cage need?
Here is a list of things that you should have in your cage.
- Water bottle
- Food bowls
- Cuttlebone and iodine are good to be in a bird's diet
- Perches (I advise you use wooden perches too, as they love to chew and play with them. You can even cut some apple tree branches and clean them for bird perches)
- Swingy perch (birds love to swing, dangle and play with these)
- Toys (such as mirrors, ladders, bells etc. to keep your bird from becoming bored)
- Nesting box (if you wish for your birds to breed)
- Sand / sandpaper for the cage floor
