All birds are very good at hiding that the are not well. In the wild, birds do this all the time to prevent them becoming prey. You need to be able to recognize when your bird is ill. How do you do this? Look out for these things -
sudden loss of weight,
lack of appetite,
sleeping for a long time during the day,
ruffled up feathers,
discharge from eyes or nostrils,
shaking or shivering,
hot/cold feet,
too much itching,
loss of weight,
loss of balance,
tail swaying back and forward,
less active,
less talkative,
one eye partially closed of fully closed,
skin around the eye, on the beak or on the legs is very dry and scaly or red,
change of dropping colour.
> Any odd behavior should be investigated, as it is better to be safe than sorry. For help and advice on what to do when you have an ill bird, see the 'Dealing with a sick bird' page.
