Local Development Frameworks

Local Development Frameworks (LDFs) are replacing Local Plans and Unitary Development Plans and are the new form of spatial plan for a District or Borough, looking up to 15 years ahead.  They show where new development and other land uses are proposed as well as containing development control policies against which planning applications will be judged.  LDFs also contain Proposals Maps illustrating policy areas and development site boundaries.

LDFs can be considered to comprise a ‘folder’ containing a number of different local development documents and other related statements, not all of which are published simultaneously.  For another diagram illustrating LDFs, click here.

The new system of development plans provides many opportunities for public consultation on their proposals, and it is far more effective to try to influence plans at this stage than to react only when planning applications are made.  There is also a Public Examination (a hearing before an independent Planning Inspector) for the most important of the proposals.

We can help you to comment on Local Development Framework documents as and when they are published.  In some cases, there are also earlier opportunities for discussion with local planning authorities.  It is vital that parish and town councils, local businesses, environmental organisations, local groups and individuals take these opportunities to influence the spatial planning of their areas.
