Friday the 13th Part 8 : Jason Takes Manhattan title

Tag Line : New York has a new problem.

Friday the 13th Part 8 : Jason Takes ManhattanAwful, awful, awful. Just when I thought the series was looking up Paramount Pictures hit us with this dreadful abomination.

Jason is still lying dormant at the bottom of crystal lake, when a passing boat snags its anchor on an underwater power cable, right next to where Jason is lying. After receiveng a huge electric jolt, Jason re-awakes and subsequently bumps off the young couple on the boat in one of the most cringe-worthy scene's I've ever witnessed.

For some bizzare reason, Jason then decides to take their boat down river. Coming accross a harbour, he finds a pleasure cruiser full of teenage kids who are setting off on a school cruise to New York City. So, Jason subsequently stows away on board and proceeds to bump off the passengers and crew.

The title of the film is extremely misleading as the vast majority of action takes place on board the pleasure cruiser, with only the last 20 minutes or so set in New York city, most of which is in the subway system and the sewers. Perhaps it would have been more apropriate to call this 8th outing "The Voyage of the Damned", particularly seeing as this last effort by Paramount doomed the series to critical damnation.

As you can probably gather I was very dissapointed with this lame effort, in spite of the return of Kane Hodder as Jason. Everything in this film just plain sucked, it was even voted biggest turkey of 1989 (I think) by readers of Fangoria magazine. Jason's method of killing wants to make you cringe with embarrasment the way he carries them out, rather than recoil in horror.

Only watch this film if, like me, your a completist and want to see the whole series.

Overall marks 3/10.

Other Information.

This monstrosity was written and directed by Rob Hedden and produced by Randolph Cheveldave, for which they should be lined up against a wall and shot! I know part 6 was a black comedy, but this is a total farce and does not deserve to bear the title "Friday the 13th". I was hoping to see the residents of Manhatten being terrorised by Jason, not see him running around the sewers chasing the last 2 survivors of his boat massacre.

Fred Molin scored the soundtrack again, due to Harry Manfredini not being able to return. His musical talents where sorely missed!

One of the scene's cut from all releases of the film showed one of the kids being killed by having darts thrown in his eyes. The final release showed an entirely differant killing, with Jason plunging a red hot rock into the guys chest in the sauna.

After this dismal effort proved barely popular at the box office, Paramount Pictures decided to not to make any further sequels. If they just decided to invest in a decent production, rather than churn out a sensless farcical slasher they might have got a bigger return. If you look at Halloween H20, compared with Halloween's 5&6, you'll see what I mean.
