Released to coincide with the 20th
anniversary of the original film, this latest entry into the
series see's the return of original scream queen Jamie Lee
Curtis, reprising her role as Laurie Strode.
Unlike the other sequel's, this film doesen't follow on from the previous one and instead concentrates on the original events that happened in part 1 (and 2).
20 years after the original Halloween murders and Laurie Strode, who has since changed her name to Keri Tate, is now the senior headmistress at a private school in Calafornia. Still plagued with nightmares about Michael Myers coming after her, she is secretly a nervous wreck, on permanent medication and constantly binging on alchohol.
Now you may remeber that in Halloween 4 (which was the 10th anniversary special) we were told that Laurie had been killed in a car crash. Well, the film doesen't totally ignore parts 4, 5, and 6, we are told that she faked her death in order to protect her life, in case Myers ever tried to come after her again.
Well, Dr Loomis, having died a couple of years ago had some fairly comprehensive files on her and Michael Myers (remember that actor Donald Pleasance passed away shortly after completing part 6) and these files are now in the possesion of his nurse Marion Whitington (The nurse in Dr Loomis's car in the original Halloween, played once again by Nancy Stephens).
Nurse Whittington had been looking after Dr Loomis before he died and following a break in at her house, a few throat slashings and a rummage through the late Dr Loomis's files, Laurie's secret is out and Myers prepares to finally finish what he started all those years ago.
As the evening of October 31st draws in, the rest of the school departs on a camping trip, leaving just Laurie, her son John (Josh Harnet) and a few of his teenage friends at the school alone. Meanwhile, Michael gets inside the school complex and Laurie is forced to face the masked killer and confront her greatest fears one last time, in a final duel to the death.
Expertly directed by Steve Miner, who also worked on some of the earlier Friday the 13th's, Halloween H20 contains all the frightening fun that made the original film such a landmark classic. There are obvious efforts that have been made to update the franchise and bring the series in line with the current trend of "scream-esq" style horror films, and in my opinion it's all the richer for it!
Released to UK cinema's during October 1998 this, the seventh Halloween film, proved highly succesful at the box office, inspite of the fact parts 5 & 6 where released direct-to-video in the UK. Look out for Janet Leigh (Jamie Lee Curtis's real life mother) and rapper L.L. Cool J who have guest starring roles. It was just a pity Donald Pleasance coulden't return as Dr Loomis one last time!
Overall Marks 8/10.

Stuntman Chris Durrand played the role of Michael Myers this time, making him the 5th actor to officially play the part. He has also worked on "The Crow", "Demolition Man" and "The Last Boy Scout" Janet Leigh, who has a couple of breif scene's as Norma the Secretary, is Jamie Lee Curtis's real life mother (in case you didn't know). This is only the second film they have starred in together, the other one being John Carpenters "The Fog". Adam Arkin, who plays the school counsellor Will Brennan, is the son of Actor Alan Arkin and is probably best known for his role in hospital drama "Chicago Hope". Josh Harnet who plays Laurie's son John, also starred in "The Faculty". Michelle Williams who plays Molly also starred as the young Sil in "Species" and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is best known for his role in the Sci-Fi comedy "Third Rock from the Sun". Jodi Lynn O'Keefe who plays Sarah went on to star in the hit comedy "She's All That". Originally John Carpenter was approached to direct, but he declined saying he had "no interest" in being involved with the film. Paving the way for Steve Miner to step into the directors role. The film was penned under the title "Halloween 7 : The Revenge of Laurie Strode", but was changed to "Halloween H20", partially to acknowledge the fact that the film is set 20 years after the original and also because they didn't want the film associated with the disasterous parts 5 & 6. The car that Janet Leigh drives off in is the same make and type that she used in Psycho. As mentioned earlier, Nancy Stephens also played nurse Whittington in the original Halloween. She was the nurse with Dr Loomis when Myers attacked them and stole their car outside Smithsgrove sanatarium. The music was scored this time by John Ottman who also scored "The Usual Suspects" and "Cruel Intentions" with additional music by Marco Beltrami, of SCREAM fame. |
