Week 38

17 Dec 2001

A day off in the week and I layed the radon membrane in the porch area and concreted it.

Saturday and time to lay the polystyrene to go under the under-floor heating.

The concrete slab in the kitchen already had jablite polystyrene under the slab so a thin 10mm layer of celotex wit builders mesh laying over was used as we didn't have the screed depth to lay more polystyrene.
You may think it is odd why the different floor constructions.  At the rear we have polystyrene covered by concrete which would have been covered by the sand and cement screed.

The rest of the house would have been done the same if we had not decided to go for under-floor heating.  So to minimise heat loss downwards into the slab we put the concrete down first then put the polystyrene on to so the under-floor heating only heats up the screed.

At the rear we had a problem because of the way the floor had been done it only left enough depth for the screed.  The answer was to put a thin layer of celotex insulation (10mm) cover it with builders mesh and clip the pipe work to the mesh.

The screed then would have some plastic fibres added to it to give it strength and enable it to be laid slightly thinner than the normal 65-70mm thick.

Sunday and a man in a strange hat came and fitted the garage door for me.  I did try and help...

The door is made up of 4 panels

The finished job and what a good job too, and it's electrically operated too.
