Classic Gloves For Sale

These gloves were donated to raise funds for The Workshop, which is still running on an ad-hoc basis.

They are labelled Waddington's Rainglove RegPatNo 456633

We've never seen anything like them before. They are leather construction with vinyl gauntlets .
The gauntlets are white on the outside with a white vinyl flap that covers the outside of the fingers secured by a popper on the middle finger .

Alternatively the flap can be rolled back and secured at the wrist .

The design includes an adjustable wrist strap and storm cuffs .

The patent ( page 1, page 2, page 3) was issued in 1937 but it's hard to believe that these particular gloves are over sixty-four years old; from their condition they look more like six months old!

The current incarnation of G. Waddington & Son Limited is Waddington (Hull) Ltd, based outside York (just to confuse people?). We are planning to contact the company and see if they have any records that may indictate how long this pattern was in production and how old these might be.

Although we have never come across gloves like these before we suspect they may have been Police issue. Certainly the design would be ideal for all-weather riding where hi-visibility was required for hand signals. The full-fingered glove construction would be preferable to mittens.

We have no idea how much they would be worth though they should appeal to collectors of classic bikes and/or Police memorabilia (assuming the Police connection is correct).
