THE GAME OF GOLF |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Golf is a sport steeped in a rich and long history and one that the British nation, particularly the Scottish who invented the game, should be justifiably proud of. The game has been played at St Andrews, referred to as the home of golf, for over 600 years. To gain a more complete historical overview of golf, download the Word document St Andrews History (29k). The
simple answer is, thousands upon thousands of people world wide, some just
for fun, some for fun but seriously, some professionally and some who are
fanatical amateurs but wish they were professionals and earning a living
from the sport they love. Personally, I fall somewhere in between the first
two categories. I don't play every week and I don't enter competitions.
I've never had a lesson and certainly don't have all the latest gear. Many
golfers believe that spending money on the latest & most expensive gear
will make them a great golfer... Dream on! Being comfortable with your correctly
sized equipment, irrespective of make/model or price, will do more for your
game than money ever can.Again simple answer... Why not? The reasons for people playing golf are as varied as the people who actually play. Some do it for relaxation, some do it for exercise, some because they enjoy competition, some because of peer pressure and a few, just because it is fashionable and it might help their career prospects if they play a round or two with the company director, especially if they let him/her win. The later reason is perhaps a little cynical however, I like people watching and, judging by some of the hackers you see on a course, they can't possibly be enjoying the difficulties they are experiencing, or can they? The game of golf is many things to many people. As
I've already said, I fall somewhere between the just for fun and
taking the fun seriously categories. I like to better my personal
score for a course if possible but if I don't, there's always the next time.
One of my first golfing partners once told me, when I was getting a little
annoyed during a game, "always remember, some days you win and some
day the course wins". If all golfers remembered that they would have
a more relaxed game and, as any pro will tell you, you play better golf
when you are relaxed any way! That's my maxim for the game and it's worked
for me so far. I
play golf because I enjoy it, I play because I like to be outside, I play
to get some exercise and I play because I enjoy being with friends and enjoy
the social chat and banter. Whatever reasons you have for playing golf (or
thinking about playing), enjoy your game and, if you see me at the 19th,
mine's a pint of Guinness... |
