SCUBA DIVING - INTRODUCTION

welcome
Enjoy the fantastic relaxation of scuba diving as a hobby with hoochfrog.com...

Hello and welcome to my scuba diving files...
What first attracted me to scuba diving? I suppose like many people of my age group who can remember the programs, it was the television series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau and the amazing images of man swimming in harmony with all manner of marine life in it's natural environment. I also have a passion for adventure, nature, water and the great outdoors. It would appear strange therefore that it took me until middle age to do something about it...

There are many reasons for the delay in getting started as a diver, some more solid that others however, now that I have dived and I am qualified, I only wish I had done it sooner!

Jack Jackson wrote in the introduction to his book, Scuba Diving - The Essential guide to Equipment & Techniques (ISBN 1-85974-460-5); 'The profusion and variety of fish and invertebrates found in both tropical and temperate waters surprises most people the first time they venture underwater'... And ...'Diving is like visiting an aquarium and getting inside with the animals. Few will swim away, some will even be curious enough to come and inspect you'... In many ways that sums up some of my personal reasons for diving!

With the advances in modern diving equipment, the reduction in overall costs and, the profusion of dive schools all over the world, the underwater world is accessible to almost everyone today. People of all ages, from all walks of life and of various physical abilities participate in the sport however, safe diving is equipment intensive and takes place in an environment alien to the human body so, correct and detailed training is essential.

More recently, television again played an important role in drawing me towards the sea, in a series featuring the famous British actor David Jason and a hobby he is passionate about, you guessed it... Scuba Diving! The picturesque locations he went to dive and his wry sense of humour, spurred me on to put the domestic & financial hiccoughs of life behind me and finally, be selfish and do something just for me!

There are two main ways in which people obtain recreational diver training today, one is by joining a diving club at home and the other, is taking a diving course whilst on holiday, either at home or abroad. I chose the latter and learned with The Dolphin Scuba Team in Turkey, despite having connections with a dive club (my brother is the Diving Officer for Craven Water Rats Sub-Aqua Club).

So there you have it, a brief introduction to how and why I dive. Please browse through the other areas of this site and see the wealth of information available which, hopefully, will increase in size as time goes by. Whilst producing this site one of my intentions has been not just to provide answers but also, to provoke debate about the various aspects of recreational diving as a pastime. I Hope you find it of interest...
