TRAVEL - GUIDES & INTERNET RESOURCES

Hooch takes a look at where to find the travel information you need before making the trip...

Travel Guides:
Many of the traditional paper guidebooks have embraced Internet technology to provide their information. Publications such as Rough Guides and Lonely Planet are being challenged as market leaders in the field, as more and more organisations compete for the top in providing information and guides for world travellers. As with any other area of personal interest, the Internet provides an absolute plethora of travel information about, places to visit, how to get there, what to take and what to do when you get there. Because of the quantity of information available, the problem these days is not, what information is available but, finding the particular stuff you actually want!

Starting Points:
When looking for travel information you can use a traditional search engine like Excite, Yahoo, Alta Vista or GOOGLE however, probably a better place to begin is one of the directories and/or search engines dedicated to the subject of travel and holiday planning. Some of the more useful resources I have found include the World Travel Guide, the World Wise Directory and the UK Foreign Office Website for general information about a particular country. For information about health matters and advice try TravelHealth.co.uk and the UK Health Service - Advice for travellers.

Looking for a bargain:
Some of the best UK resources for securing that bargain priced trip you are looking for include
Bargainholidays.com which also provides a wealth of information about destinations, lastminute.com for what it says, a last minute deal and, last but by no means least, Teletext Holidays who were probably the original UK source of electronic holiday bargains to the Consumer.

Favourite sources of Information:
Some of the resources I most often use include the ones shown below. They are included for the reasons stated and in no particular order.
  • Kasbah.com - My absolute favourite starting point for travel information, just take a look at the facilities available and perhaps you will agree with me.
  • World Travel Guide - An extremely comprehensive site of world travel information that allows you to collect and compile a 'mini guide' to your intended destination and then print it out.
  • Travel Donkey - A travel guide written for travellers by travellers. Visitors to the site can submit their hints, tips and observations about a holiday destination for the benefit of fellow travellers.
  • Book Tailor - A nifty resource that allows you to 'build' your own travel guidebook online and then have it delivered in printed form to take with you on your trip. Limited so far to the more popular destinations however, I am sure the options will increase in the future.
  • The Compleat Carry-On Traveller - If you are one of those people who has problems deciding what to take and what not to take when you travel, take a look hear for some interesting advice.
