This is a list of places in the Black Isle. It includes towns, hamlets, farmsteads, and houses. The western boundary is roughly a north-south line running just west of Dingwall but there are a few places to the west of this line. And there are one or two places situated on or near the northern shore of the Cromarty Firth.
The list has been compiled from modern maps of the Ordnance Survey 'Pathfinder' series on a scale of 1:25000. Note that some areas such as Knockbain are very diffuse. Some names (especially of houses) such as 'Broomhill' or 'Woodside' can occur more than once in very different places. Some of the houses are modern and did not exist in the previous century. An old house may not be recognised because it appears on the present-day maps under a new name. Or the old name might occur but refer to a totally different location. Nevertheless I hope that the list will be of some assistance to those living elsewhere.
