THE CRANKSHAW FAMILY

This is a totally separate Crankshaw line with no known link to my Cronkshaws. I have not come across any members of this family using the Cronkshaw spelling but some of them are recorded in the census as Crawshaw/Cranshaw. These people are not ancestors but are related through marriage into my Stukins line.

Richard Ernest Crankshaw married Ada Stukins in Haslingden in 1917. His uncle, Richard Crankshaw was a grocer in Crawshawbooth. The line seems to be as follows:-

Richard Crankshaw b1806, a blacksmith, had 3 children by his wife Sarah. All born in Higher Booth.
  • James 1828
  • Mary 1835
  • Sarah 1839
James started life as a blacksmith but by 1871 has become a grocer. In 1851 the 3 children are living with an aunt so Richard may have died. James married an Elizabeth and they also had three children all born in Crawshawbooth:-
  • Sarah 1853
  • Richard 1857
  • James Edward 1860 married Betsy.
Richard worked in the mills for a time but by 1881 his father James had died and his widow had taken over the grocery business in Burnley Road which she still had in 1901. Richard worked as her assistant and I believe he must have taken over the shop after her death. James Edward and Betsy were living in Hill Street, not far away, in 1891 and they later had three children (at least):-
  • Richard Ernest 1892
  • Arnold 1897
  • Ellen 1899
This is the Richard Ernest who married Ada Stukins. In 1918 they had a son John James who was killed in 1943 in Sicily.
