GREENHALGH IN AINSWORTH
In 1973 the then Vicar of Ainsworth published a book on the history of the area also known as Cockey Moor. I have compiled an index to this book. For various reasons there seems little point in publishing the whole index to the web but I below I have abstracted the references to Greenhalgh. My original note to the index makes it clear that the index is meant to be used in conjunction with the book but nevertheless where the book merely reports (say) a birth the index will serve the same purpose as dates are given. Note I have added dates so that if you are seeking a person in 1902 you do not waste time looking up a person who was living in the 16th century. The Greenhalgh extracts below differ a little from the full index as I have added, in one or two places, little snippets of information from the book on the assumption that some people reading this will not be able to look up the reference.
The book has lists (pages 104 to 127) of baptisms, marriages, burials entered in the registers for Bolton, Bury, Middleton, Radcliffe. Also some for Heywood, Deane, Rochdale, Turton. And Chester marriage licences. The author notes that names are included only when they are stated to refer to Ainsworth residents, and that others could be hidden with the registers where this has not been explicitly stated. Also note that in some cases an entry in a register of one these churches may refer to an event that took place at Ainsworth.
Most of the pages from 132 on consist of stories of village life. On page 132 the author notes that the originator of some of the stories may have changed the names of his characters.
Almost all the entries refer to Christian names except for a general reference to the family at the beginning and 2 references at the end. This seemed better than breaking into the main sequence.
