PICTURE OF JOSEPH STUKINS

and
his wife Alice Chattwood

Joseph Stukins was a carter working for the firm of James and John WHITTAKER. He was killed in 1908 in an accident involving his own horses. In 1902 he was part of the team that carted the 'new' Pilgrim's Cross to its site high on the moors above Holcombe to the west of Ramsbottom. The block of stone stands on the site of a much older cross that stood on an old route to Whalley Abbey.
