I have few details of this family. Henry TURNER, my 2g-grandfather, married Ann CLITHEROE at St Leonard, Walton-le-Dale in 1814. They had 6 children and when the first 4 were born the family were living at Bamber Bridge which is near Walton-le-Dale. In the 1851 Census the parents give their birthplace as Cleaton (= Clayton ??) Lee. I am not sure where this is although possibly near Clayton-le-Moors or Clayton-le-Woods come to mind. Both of these are not very distant from Tottington where the family was settled by 1841. On a later census Nanny (Ann) gives Bamber Bridge as a birth place and the older children were born in Walton or Bamber Bridge depending on the source. Bamber Bridge is south of Preston about half way to Clayton-le-Woods down the old A6, and Walton will be Walton-le-Dale (also very close). As this is not an area I know very well I have done little so far to research their early history. Henry was born about 1779 and Nanny about 10 years younger. They had 4 children:-
  • Betty bap.1817 St Leonard, Walton-le-Dale
  • Thomas bap 1819 St Leonard, Walton-le-Dale. Possibly buried 1843 Tottington Wesleyan
  • Henry bap 1821 St Leonard, Walton-le-Dale. d1863. block printer
  • Mary bap 1824 St Leonard, Walton-le-Dale. d1866
  • Margaret 1829-1892 b Tottington (in 1862 m David GREENHALGH)
  • Jane 1834 Tottington. Possibly married Richard HOLT and they had a son Thomas b.1857
Margaret and David Greenhalgh had 3 children. There is a memorial in Tottington Wesleyan churchyard to Margaret, David, and 2 daughters. Their son is buried in another grave with his wife. There is also a plot (no memorial as far as I know) containing several Turners. I think Henry (the elder) and Ann, Henry the younger, and Mary - probably Henry's sister. There is also a Thoimas (Thomas?) died 1843 age 23 who is likely to be the second child of Henry and Ann. There is also a William Holt d 1862 age 8 months - possibly a brother to Thomas Holt. I have been unable to trace Jane and Richard after 1861. In 1871 Thomas, age 13, appears as an errand boy living with David and Margaret so it could be that one or both parents died or moved elsewhere.
