Brooksby Apiary belonging to L&RBKA

We are fortunate in having a superb apiary at Brooksby bee yard (between Leicester and Melton Mowbray). Our facilities are extensive and of high quality:-

'Beginners',

'Improvers',

'Queen Rearing'

'Instrumental Insemination'.

Experiments are carried out.

Here we can see a swarm, complete with twigs, in a purpose built observation hive. Much interest and fascination was shown by visitors to the apiary and at shows where the hive was exhibited.

This also enabled the study of the development of a swarm into a full sized colony.

We have lecture facilities which complement the 'hands on' teaching. Here a group relax with coffee whilst discussing what they have just seen and done.

Beginners are able to ask for assistance or more information from other beekeepers with wide ranges of experience. Much discussion occurs about bees and beekeeping methods.

The site has workshop and library facilities (for beekeeping books and videos) and a large mating apiary around the back of the workshop building that is equipped with arrays of posts to hold the mating nucs.

The top of each post is fitted with two compound mitred blocks developed by John Groocock.
