with gasmask                                          retirement time

I am David Dell and was at Binefield House,Oxted in 1942,then Teignmouth to after V.E. day (see party picture) ,and after a spell in Derby,at Bemrose, waiting to return to London,I finished at Hatcham in 1948.

At that time there had been a decision that National Service would be served before going to University, consequently "Ned" advised parents that the boys should start work before call-up and forget University ,unless they were confident of high class degrees!

"Percy" recommended Unilever so I went, having visited Shell and Customs and found them wanting.
For my sins I was placed in a new young company called
Birds Eye Foods and it took me 40 years to escape!

Having read the earlier edition of the Old Askean, page 11,I seem to remember the Police coming to the School to collect the Cordite we had in matchboxes.Dropping grenades off Shaldon Ness also seems to come to mind.
As does guddling for trout, snares for rabbits and eating raw carrots as a supplement to the food rations.Or at Teignmouth finding a Salmon in a pool, hitting it on the head with a stone and taking it home for tea! Mrs Northcott was delighted.

The only warning we had was to avoid 303's with red tips since they were Tracer, but the rest we put between two rocks and twisted the bullet off,to get to the Cordite. It was sweet tasting but one of members went "green"!
Sweet Cider at the "bottle and jug" and sleep it off in the park---I seem to remember that we had a" firework" accident which cost someone part of their finger.Which shows that fireworks were more dangerous than live ammunition!

If we could survive the V.1  that bounced off the Tree at the bottom off the Binefield House garden, while we were all in the Top room doing our Homework,we could survive most things. That was presumably after we had practised descending from the top window on the webbing safety harness!

Len Blanche(1943 to 1947),now of Smarden, remembers the slivers of glass sticking in the wall over the table-tennis table
Incidentally I am reminded that we had collected just about all parts of the V.1.(apart from the warhead) and they were at the bottom of the Binefield garden, before we were despatched to Teignmouth.---where we were stood in the schoolyard and selected by the local ladies!

Last time I looked at the Millpond I couldn't believe we had swum in it!

Another odd one, starving schoolboys ate most things including raw carrots and crab-apples,but I met a Director of Unilever who lived in Icehouse Wood and he asked how we enjoyed his "quinces",which we had mistakenly thought were pears!
