Mini Trailer - An unplanned project - Part 3.

Having got a basic frame created I now needed a tow bar of some description, my plan was to use an old scaffold pole I had ‘kicking about’ and set about trying to create the right bends and height adjustments to make the trailer sit level when its on the car, whether I’ve got this right or not remains to be seen !!

I tried to weld the towbar using the mig welder but was somewhat dubious about the its power output, this proved obvious when after welding up and light tap from hammer broke all the joints.....back to the drawing board! A pokey arc welder was used to create the towbar and now seems very strong.

To make sure the towbar didn’t come off at any point I decided to drill a round hole through the rear-subframe and push the towbar through the centre of the subframe before bolting it front and back through the subframe and the trailer floor itself, hopefully that will never come off !!

Progress halted here for a while, several months at least whilst I got carried away with the cabrio fuel injection project which turned into a much bigger task than I had anticipated.

However eventually I got the urge to carry on with the trailer, mainly because I was fed up with it taking up a large chunk of the garden and its been full steam ahead ever since.

In the months I had a rest from construction Shawn very kindly offered a bodykit for a Mini he didn’t want any more and whilst I was looking for a way to ‘tidy up’ the edges of the trailer the bodykit seemed the ideal solution.

I already had the arches to suit 13 inch wheels which was the original plan and these seemed to compliment the body kit and much hack-sawing later, not to mention numerous trial fittings of the body kit and wheel arches began to take shape.

Another industrial tub of filler later resulted in a relatively smooth looking body kitted trailer. This of course was a lengthy process of filling sanding and more filling and more sanding and so on, not one I particularly enjoyed but its nice to see it taking shape as its now not that far from being finished .....
