Bristol in the Post-War Period

A 1950’s view of the Bathurst Wharf in the days when ocean-going freighters, such as the "Laila", pictured above, unloaded their cargo in what is now known as the ‘Historic City Docks’. This view would have been taken from the middle of Prince Street Bridge, will is still hydraulically operated to this day, its pump house and tower standing adjacent to it. In the distance, to the left, stands the tower and spire of the beautiful St.Mary Redcliffe church. The row of buildings to the right of St.Mary’s remains essentially unaltered. The three cargo sheds below the church and the brick gabled building to their right have now gone. Also, there are no cranes left in the vicinity of this view. They could possibly be some of the cranes that are now preserved on the Princes Wharf, to the back of the camera; there is no way of identifying them in this view. The floating dock, in the lower right corner of this view is no longer there.
