Bristol in the Post-War Period

A view of the 19th century frontage of the Theatre Royal, as it was in the 1950’s. This theatre is the longest running in the United Kingdom, starting with the play, "A Question of Rhetorick" (sic), in the mid-18th century! Unbelievably, in the 1960’s, this beautiful frontage was actually demolished to make way for an appalling new frontage in the typical lacklustre style that was 1960’s architecture. This architectural vandalism was also extended to the still-existing frontage to the right, known as the Millers’ Hall, which had its period wooden doors removed, and some totally out-of-character all-glass ‘supermarket-style’ doors put in their place! Thankfully, the still-existing frontage to the left has remained intact! To think that these lamentable alterations were carried out to what is the longest-running theatre in the United Kingdom is totally beyond my, and many other peoples’ comprehension!
