A view from Redcliffe Bridge, taken in the early 1960’s, when ocean-going merchantmen were still handling their cargo at the City Docks. All the dockside cranes in this picture have since disappeared. The ship near the middle of this view is discharging a cargo of gravel onto the dockside, where now the "Thekla", a floating theatre, is berthed. To the left of this ship, just above the concave corner of the quayside, stands the building now called "The Mud Dock", which has now become a restaurant these days. The similar, but smaller building to the left of the Mud Dock is now a shop selling locally made pottery and other souvenirs. The building partially obscured by the Mud Dock was the Bush Warehouse, which is now the Arnolfini arts complex, with galleries, bookshop, a cinema, and a wine bar. Many of the buildings along ‘The Grove’, behind the pile of gravel, have since been replaced by modern office developments. On the horizon, slightly left of middle, can be seen the Cabot Tower, with the top of the Cathedral Tower lower down, just to the right. To the much further right can be seen the top of the University Tower.
