Bristol in the Edwardian Period

A view of a long since disappeared College Green, as it would have looked about 100 years ago! The only structure in this view that still survives in situ to this day is the Cabot Tower, to the mid-right of centre. In the centre of this view can be seen the Bristol High Cross, which is a Neo-Gothic copy of the original Mediaeval one, and has now been moved to Berkeley Square, near said Cabot Tower. The original Mediaeval Bristol High Cross was purchased by the Hoare family, and re-erected on their country estate, namely the beautiful and world-famous Stourhead Gardens in Wiltshire, where it can still be seen to the present day. Behind the Bristol High Cross now stands the Council House, commenced in the 1930’s, and opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1955. To the extreme left edge of this view is the road of College Green, now also disappeared in the alterations of the 1990’s. Note the clothing worn by the two young girls to the left of lower centre.
