Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition in which recurrent abdominal pain with constipation and/or diarrhoea continues for years without any general
deterioration in health. The cause is unknown but onset of symptoms is often associated with stress or anxiety and may follow a severe infection of the intestine. Herbal treatment often involves the use of herbs that are anxiolytic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative and tonic. Dietary advice is also frequently given when treating this disorder. The herbs are most often prescribed as tinctures diluted in water and herbal infusions. |
