MENOPAUSAL PROBLEMS

Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her ovaries cease to produce an egg every four weeks; menstruation ceases and she is no longer able to bear children. Menopause can occur at any age between the middle thirties and middle fifties but is most common between the ages 45 and 55.

The menstrual flow may reduce over successive periods or the intervals between periods lengthen; alternatively the menstrual periods may come to a complete and sudden stop over night. In some women menopause is as a result of a total hysterectomy or oophorectomy. Whatever the reason, menopause results in a change in the balance of the sex hormones in a woman’s body that may result in her experiencing hot flushes, night sweats, palpitations and a dryness of the mucous membranes of her vagina. Some women also report emotional disturbances, memory loss, difficulty concentrating and pains in the joints associated with the onset of menopause.

Herbal medicine has a great deal to offer in this area and when combined with some subtle changes to diet a huge improvement in quality of life can be achieved as well as, in many cases, a complete cessation of the symptoms experienced.

Herbs are most commonly taken as a tincture or fluid extract diluted in water.
